Pia Bark - in english
Pia makes jewelry inspired by the landscape
Inspired by the billowing landscape in Östergötland, the goldsmith Pia Bark is constantly bursting with new ideas. With nearly 30 years of experience in the field, Pia creates jewelry to make you feel as though you're wearing a piece of the swedish landscape on your body.
Pia has lived in the small town of Ödershög for 30 years. The nature around Ödeshög and nearby Omberg has been influential in the jewelry she creates. She describes her visions around her creations as verging on surrealism, a way to interact with the landscape through her art.
– I view the landscape almost as a piece of jewelry in itself. I want to be able to bathe in the billowing fields and that is the imagery that I picture for myself when I create, as well as the feeling that I want to convey with my pieces.
Pias favorite material to work with is gold, but as the prices of gold have become higher, Pia has been working more with silver. Sometimes incorporating stones and colors.
– What’s special about gold is that it keeps its luster. Silver takes more work than gold to keep pristine as it oxidizes with time. But I like to use the natural characteristics of silver and work with it instead of against it.
Gold is symbolic, it symbolizes the heavenly, beauty and preciousness. I lke to
incorporate gold details in my silver silver jewelry Whyred I van.
Pia is bursting with ideas, but has found that they tend to evolve if she lets them rest in her dresser for a while. As soon as she has the time she draws out new sketches. But they don’t always turn into jewelry at once.
– I’ve found that time often makes them better. Details emerge in my mind that I didn’t think of when the ideas first came to me. I have a lot of ideas waiting to be created, which is exciting.
Pia spends as much time as she can in her workshop, where she also has a showroom where people can come to view her jewelry and learn more about her work and inspiration.
– It’s important to me that people don’t feel like they have to buy somthing just because they come to look at my work. It’s just fun to have people stopping by to see what I do.
For Pia, creating equals joy. And when she gets to her workshop it’s not a quick stop, she spends hours upon hours to get in the groove and to embrace the flow that the creation process puts her in.
– It’s a joy to create and make my many ideas come to life in the materials I use.
